Srinivassan, the Director of Yatra Arts Foundation has selected a group of actors and trained them to carry out health education street plays and social dramas about many subjects like AIDS, Nutrition for children, Necessity of Toilet, Polio, Forest Conservation and Alcoholism. These plays are put on in the local villages. We have been instrumental in spreading knowledge about various health initiatives of the Government with our drama program.

The aim of the Yatra theatre team is to create awareness and improve knowledge about the most common social issues and diseases and health hazards. Our experience shows that when people gain understanding, social problems, diseases and hazards can be more easily prevented. As lectures or talks are soon forgotten and often quite boring, we have selected drama and video as the most appropriate tools to reach the local villagers.

We have worked with various NGO's providing awareness programs in the villages on a number of different subjects:
- for the Auroville Health Centre on Health related issues,
- for Auroville's Pitchandikulam Bioresource Centre on Forest conservation and the Importance of Medicinal Plants,
- for Auroville Palmyra on Water Tank rehabilitation and Waste Land Development Projects,
- for DANIDA on Water and Sanitation programs.
- together with Avalokita we performed street theatres about water issues.

The YATRA theater team has participated in many drama competitions in Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu state level and won several awards in best script, direction, and best acting. We have so far written a total of 16 plays covering health topics such as scabies, garbage, hygiene, toilets, children's nutrition, pregnancy, polio, water borne diseases, waste disposal, filariasis, plague, worms, road accidents, forest conservation and importance of medicinal plants, AIDS, and tuberculosis. The social topics include alcoholism, dowry, youth development, caste problem, poverty, importance of education, womanpower and child labour.
